Delegation of Authority


Delegation of authority is one of the main pillars of management. One good characteristic of a leadership is delegation of authority. "Sharing is Delegation." This statement is a basic principle that explains what it actually delegation of authority.

Robert Heller defines delegation of authority as entrust the job to someone else but responsibility is still in the hand of Leader . Tony Atherton defines delegation of authority as entrust the authority and responsibility to someone else clearly and approved under the supervision of manager or leader but manager or leader still holding all the responsibility.

Delegation of authority the organize process within the framework of the organization to involve as many people and personally directly in making of decision, directing, and implementation of job.


Delegation of authority is an action to delegate the task (which is definite and clear), authority, rights, responsibilities, for employee as detail as possible in every job position. It is by dividing the duties, authority, rights, responsibilities, obligations, and accountability, which is set in a job descriptions within the organization .

There are several reasons why the Manager or leadership should do delegation of authority, :

1. To develop the organization
2. Saves time
3. Motivate and develop employee .

Leaders can only work together through others, something that can only be the accomplishment of the delegation of authority. Through delegation of authority, the leader gave the task, authority, rights, responsibilities, obligations and responsibilities to employee to finish the task.

By delegating, organization can run well without the presence of top leaders or supervisors directly

Delegating a job to employee, is an advantage of a leader. But surprising to know that there are many leader / manager not like it and use it. There are several reasons there are:


1. Not understand what work needs to be delegated
2. Not sure employee can do the appropriate working standard
3. Not trust the ability, knowledge and expertise of the employee
4. Employee is quite busy with his own work
5. Not know how to delegate work effectively
6. Too much worry when delegating the work
Delegation of authority does not just covers the delegation of work to employee, but also built a good working climate based on trusting and processing of increasing employee motivation. It a little bit difficult, but it could be learned.

Every good leader needs to understand and implement the delegation of authority with responsibility to success in leadership. A good leader would understand that he can only work together and through others (employee). To achieve that, it can make through delegation of authority
